The word ‘Dutch’ would tell you how this etiquette of dating came about, from the Netherlands. It is also called ‘Dutch Date’ and ‘Dutch Treat’. Dutch dating means that each person will pay for their share when they go out on a date. This method of dating is often the best when both parties are new to each other, independent, or just friends.
Many people often like to go Dutch because they are not comfortable with someone else paying for them. This is common with women who are liberal or independent in their thinking.
Going Dutch can apply between friends as well. Many people agree to ‘go Dutch’ as a tactful way to level the financial playing field. One friend may feel uncomfortable with the idea of another friend in better financial shape always footing the bill. When two or more people agree to ‘go Dutch’, each is free to spend within his or her personal budget. Even if one person can afford to order the most expensive item on the menu, the rest of the group is not obligated to spend outside their own limits.
